Newt Gingrich: Friend of a Free and Open Internet?

by Pejman Yousefzadeh on January 22, 2012

Well, no.

Let us be spared any effort to differentiate censoring the Internet to combat terrorists with censoring the Internet to combat intellectual piracy. Such an attempt would only be plausible if Gingrich had bothered to think through his proposal to censor the Internet so that there wouldn’t be so many holes in the plan he laid out. As the link makes clear, no serious attempt was made to put any flesh on Gingrich’s plan. And of course, putting out half-baked ideas without any kind of follow-through is a Gingrichian specialty–and not the kind of skill set we want to see in a president.
