Peter Feaver notes the obvious; the White House and its fans are trying to have it both ways when it comes to the debate over Iraq.
I recognize, of course, that the coming election will primarily be about the economy. But it is still useful to point out that the administration’s position on Iraq is not even remotely intellectually respectable, especially given the fact that the administration had the chance to amend the SOFA in order to take into account changed circumstances in Iraq–and wanted to do so–but completely dropped the ball. The administration’s intellectual dishonesty on the issue of Iraq is thus coupled with manifest incompetence; all of which would serve to give some enterprising Republican presidential nominee the ability to make a powerful case for the proposition that a change in leadership is needed.
