Google to Government: Don’t Be Evil

by Pejman Yousefzadeh on October 24, 2011

When someone like Eric Schmidt–who is no one’s idea of a Republican–feels the need to speak out against over-regulation and the lack of government innovation, you know that a sea change is coming to Silicon Valley, which traditionally has been a source of stalwart support for the Democratic party.

I am sure that the response of big government supporters will be to denounce Schmidt’s attempt to point out some basic truths about the interactions between government and the high tech industry, and to demand that Google be scrutinized even more than it currently is as a way to punish Schmidt for daring to say what he has said. They would do better to learn from Schmidt and others who are increasingly concerned about the reach of the regulatory state, and about the state’s inability to keep up with innovation in the private sector.
