Another Reader Bleg

by Pejman Yousefzadeh on October 3, 2011

I have asked once before whether readers would like open threads on this blog. The amount of reader enthusiasm in response to my initial query was, shall we say, underwhelming, but I figured I should ask again. Obviously, the typical comment rules would apply; no personal attacks, no offensive remarks (if you are in doubt as to whether a comment is offensive, then don’t make the comment), etc. But I am happy to encourage stimulating conversation on this blog, and if open threads would help do that, then I am happy to put some up.

Please indicate in comments whether you are interested. If there are no comments, then I will assume that there is no interest. Thanks.

I’m a semi-regular reader here. I like your slightly right of center/libertarian perspective. I’m not sure what would be achieved by having open threads — would there be suggestions of topics for you to blog on? If so, I think I might rather prefer that you spend your time on what you have been blogging about (takedowns of Krugman, etc.) than responding to random topics.

I wouldn’t mind suggestions on what to blog about, though there is no guarantee that I will be able to all, or even most suggestions; oftentimes, I cannot even get to things I plan on writing about. But of course, open threads can also lead to the creation of vibrant communities, and there is no reason why people can’t debate amongst themselves, assuming that they keep things civil and above board.
Thank you most kindly for your thoughts, and your readership.

Sadly, the length of a comments thread tends to be inversely proportional to the quality of the comments and the intellectual capacity of the respondents.  You write well-reasoned posts in a moderate tone and (probably) attract a smarter than average readership – the exact opposite of most (but not all) “vibrant” communities.

Or, on a snarkier note, one could observe that anybody smart enough to read your blog is probably a productive member of society with better things to do than endlessly post on an internet message board.  Maybe you should go recruit some of those “occupy wall street” hippies to make the threads more interesting! ;-p

Your snarky suggestion would mean utter doom for this blog. I hope no evil genius learns about it.
