Why Is There a Holdup On Approving Trade Pacts?

by Pejman Yousefzadeh on July 8, 2011

Because Democrats insist on inserting provisions for Trade Adjustment Assistance programs into trade pacts.

You remember Trade Adjustment Assistance programs. They don’t work as advertised. At all. The only thing Trade Adjustment Assistance programs are capable of doing is preventing the enactment of free trade agreements that might serve to get the economy out of its anemic growth stage.

Wouldn’t it be nice if someone decided to make a campaign issue out of this until Trade Adjustment Assistance programs are no longer used as poison pill provisions to kill free trade agreements?
