No Longer a Political Colossus

by Pejman Yousefzadeh on July 27, 2011

If the election were held today, Barack Obama may well lose it.

Of course, the election is not being held today, which means that the President still has time to make a political comeback against a Republican Presidential candidate field that remains rather weak when standing on its own. But we are long past the days when it was thought that Obamaesque charisma and charm would be enough to guarantee the President a second term.

Watch for the port side to complain that the President’s weaknesses stem from (a) his supposed unwillingness to be more liberal than he is, and (b) Republican intransigence. Of course, we will have little to no port side discussion of the possibility that maybe the President is liberal enough, and that liberalism is passé, as far as Americans are concerned. We can’t have that kind of conversation, now can we?

UPDATE: I suppose that it is only fair to note this to assuage Obamaphiles. (Via Andrew Gelman.)
