Music to My Eyes

Given that education reform is the most important aspect of the ongoing struggle to improve civil rights, I am incredibly heartened to read that Governor Chris Christie of New Jersey is planning to ensure that competence–not teacher tenure or seniority–will determine who gets the right to teach New Jersey’s kids. Doubtless, the Governor will catch yet more grief from teachers over this latest attempt to put parents and kids ahead of teachers’ unions, but as policies go, this one is as necessary as they come.

I don’t know if Chris Christie harbors any ambitions to be President of the United States anytime soon. He certainly doesn’t act like he does; he regularly puts the right thing over what might help him politically. And that, of course, is why we need someone who at the very least is very much like him to serve at 1600 Penn. Ave. sometime soon.
