Alas . . .

While I did have some hope that the United States might advance in the World Cup, yesterday’s game against Ghana showed that the Americans still have a great deal of work to do to make their team a first-class one. Ghana outplayed the United States for most of the game; the Americans could only go to the comeback well so many times before their congenital habit of falling behind early caught up with them.

Ah, well. At least the Americans could say that they won their group, and they certainly put up a tougher fight against Ghana than their fellow group member, England, did against Germany. And yes, I am aware of the controversy concerning the England-Germany game, and perhaps if England were awarded the disputed goal, the game might have changed. But it appears that England was entirely overwhelmed by Germany, so the controversy notwithstanding, it isn’t difficult to conclude that the better team did win.
