Iran Links Of Note

by Pejman Yousefzadeh on May 24, 2010

It has been a while since I wrote a post concerning Iran. Here are some interesting links:

1. Maziar Bahari’s Kafkaesque nightmare continues. For some background on Bahari’s plight, read this. And this. And do be sure to check out this:

The Daily Show With Jon Stewart Mon – Thurs 11p / 10c
Maziar Bahari
Daily Show Full Episodes Political Humor Tea Party

Presumably, your head has stopped spinning. On to the other links.

2. Jafar Panahi continues to be persecuted. It is somewhat reassuring to hear that he may be released on bail, but it took a debilitating hunger strike to bring that about. And nothing about his fate is certain, which leaves his supporters plenty of cause for concern.

3. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad still lacks credibility:

Hecklers at an outdoor speech by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Monday shouted their concerns about unemployment, in a rare display of dissent in front of the hardline leader.

While Ahmadinejad addressed a crowd in the port city of Khorramshahr, in a speech marking the anniversary of a key battle in the Iran-Iraq war, several members of the crowd could be heard chanting: “Unemployment! Unemployment!”

The president’s speeches are regularly carried live on Iranian TV where crowds more usually respond with slogans such as “God is Greatest” and “Death to America”.

Flynt and Hillary Mann Leverett will doubtless come along soon and remind us that Ahmadinejad is the most popular bearded man in the Middle East since Yahshua himself.
