Building Better Teachers

In the aftermath of the death of Jaime Escalante–of Stand and Deliver fame–the Los Angeles Times asks how we might “replicate” Escalante.

The editorial offers some good ideas, to be sure. But seeing as how it does not mention introducing merit pay, firing bad teachers, breaking up teachers’ unions that do more to protect their members than they do to provide kids with quality educations, or introducing school choice methods that will reward schools with better teachers, the editorial can hardly be said to be complete and comprehensive in its analysis of the problems of the American educational system, and what solutions might improve the state of American education.
