So Much For Transparency

by Pejman Yousefzadeh on November 9, 2009

Apparently, open government was only worth agitating about when Republicans ran the House of Representatives.

Media Matters argues that charges that Nancy Pelosi broke her pledge to post the health care bill online 72 hours in advance of a vote are false, because the pledge doesn’t apply to Rules Committee amendments. Of course, this caveat makes the pledge worthless, given that the House Rules Committee is immensely powerful, and helps determine the nature of legislation through its amendment process. Media Matters’s explanation, therefore, hardly serves as an excuse for Pelosi’s failure to adhere to important and consequential transparency rules.
