On "Fringe" Health Care Protests

by Pejman Yousefzadeh on August 5, 2009

The Democratic National Committee has apparently decided to take them on. Unfortunately for the DNC, Amanda Carey decided to take the DNC on.

No one should be surprised by the DNC’s tactic. As Carey writes, “fringe elements exist (as they do in every movement), but placing all the focus on that element makes it tough to have the ‘legitimate conversation’ the Democrats say they desperately want.” There are plenty of respectful and legitimate protests going on against the various Democratic health care reform plans. They do not get attention from outfits like the DNC, precisely because they are so difficult to demonize. No one should forget this.

I suppose now would be a good time to link to Marc Ambinder as well. Just because “astro-turfing” is being tossed around, does not mean that there isn’t genuine emotion behind the protests. Obviously, people need to be respectful and considerate, and shouting someone down is a sign of intellectual weakness, not strength. But that doesn’t change the fact that there is legitimate feeling behind a lot of the protests concerning health care reform.
