What Would Abba Eban Have Said About Fidel Castro?

by Pejman Yousefzadeh on April 23, 2009

Ah, yes: “Fidel Castro never misses an opportunity to miss an opportunity.”

This development doesn’t alter my belief that there should be a change in American policy concerning Cuba. But there are many who are exceedingly willing to ascribe benevolent intentions to the Cuban regime. Fidel Castro’s efforts to be something of a diplomatic killjoy ought to remind them that the Cuban government remains the cause of Cuba’s problems. After all, what Cuban leader other than those named “Castro” and those who share his ideology would actually be stupid enough to decline to end the embargo the Cuban leadership claims has been solely and exclusively responsible for the country’s economic problems? (Never mind the fact that an embargo from a single country–even one as powerful as the United States–is not nearly enough to bring down the Cuban economy all by its lonesome.)
